Halloween
Halloween, also know as Night of the Dead, is a modern celebration resulting from the syncretism originated by the christianization of the end of the summer festival of celtic origin called Samhain. Halloween has its origin in Ireland, in the rites of the Celts of the end of the harvest season. From there it went to the United Kingdom, then, from Europe, the celebration moved to the United States, and since then it has been popularizing in Latin America.
This festivity is celebrated on the night of October 31st, mainly in the anglo-saxon world: United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom, with the exception of Australia and New Zealand where the tradition is not so rooted. In Spain and Latin America, in general, this celebration is considered an american party, but there and traditions and celebrations that same day with the same meaning of closeness to the world of the dead.
October 31st is celebrated both by children and adults. It is customary to wear costumes and masks and in some places they have parades of undead in the streets. Children ask for sweets from door to door in the well-known "trick or treat"; and adults hold parties. This is how it is celebrated in the United States, while in Latin America altars are made to their dead and offerings, families go to the cementeries to clean the tombs and put flowers to their relatives who are no longer present, although sometimes it is common that boys and girls ask for sweets.
In conclusion, halloween began being a pagan festival, of celtic origin that marked the end of summer. however, with the migration reached many countries that have adopted this celebration, adding costumes, sweets and scares.
Although it is a very popular holiday, there are religious people who reject it, describing it as a satanic festival, but, as Roger Clarke wrote, "ghost literature has been England's great gift to the world", halloween is not a satanic party, having a pagan origin (takin into account that religion has demonized every pagan holiday) has been highly rejected. However, and in my opinion, it is a beautiful holiday seeing it on the spiritual side, where our loved ones return to visit us.
